GENERAL INFORMATION

Mauritius has a rich and diverse history. It was first discovered by Arab sailors in the 10th century, later colonised by the Dutch in the 17th century, and subsequently became a French and then British colony. It gained independence in 1968 and has since developed into a multicultural and thriving nation.

Location: Mauritius is in the Indian Ocean, off the southeast coast of the African continent. It is situated about 2,000 km off the southeast coast of Africa. The island is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is located east of Madagascar.

Mauritius has no land borders, as it is an island nation. However, it is part of the Mascarene Islands, which also includes the French overseas territories of Réunion and Rodrigues. These islands are located to the southwest and east of Mauritius, respectively.

In terms of its closest neighbours, Mauritius is approximately 900 km east of Madagascar and about 1,200 km southeast of Seychelles.

Etymology: The name "Mauritius" derives from Prince Maurice van Nassau, a Dutch prince and the stadtholder (governor) of the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. The Dutch named the island after him, who were the first European settlers on the island. The Dutch called the island "Mauritius" in honour of Prince Maurice when establishing a settlement there in 1638. The name remained unchanged even after the island came under French and then British control.

Symbol: One of the most iconic symbols of Mauritius is the dodo, an extinct flightless bird that once inhabited the island. With its unique appearance and unfortunate demise, the dodo has become a symbol of the island's natural history and vulnerability. Although the dodo is no longer found in Mauritius, its legacy lives on, reminding visitors of the importance of conservation and preserving the island's unique biodiversity. As you explore the stunning landscapes and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Mauritius, please take a moment to appreciate the significance of the dodo and its place in the island's history. Whether you encounter dodo statues, artwork, or references in museums, the dodo serves as a constant reminder of the need to protect and cherish the island's natural treasures.

Size: Mauritius is a relatively small island nation with a total land area of approximately 2,040 km2. It is about 65 km long and 45 km wide at its widest point.

Capital: Port Louis

Population: Despite its small size, Mauritius is densely populated, with a population of over 1.27 million (2021). The population of Mauritius has been steadily increasing over the years, with a growth rate of around 0.3% per year. The majority of the population resides in urban areas, with the capital city of Port Louis being the most populated. The population of Mauritius is diverse, with people of Indian, African, Chinese, and European descent, among others.

Languages: The official languages are English and French. Creole is widely spoken.

Currency: Mauritian Rupee. For reference: 1 MUR = 0,021 EUR; 1 MUR = 0,022 USD

Economy: Mauritius has a highly developed and diverse economy, classified as upper-middle-income by the World Bank. Key sectors include tourism, manufacturing, financial services, and agriculture.

  • Tourism significantly contributes to the economy, attracting international visitors with its beautiful beaches and luxury resorts. This sector creates jobs and brings in foreign exchange.

  • Manufacturing, particularly textiles, clothing, and sugar processing, is essential. Mauritius exports garments and is expanding into pharmaceuticals, electronics, and jewellery.

  • The financial services sector is significant, with Mauritius serving as a regional economic hub. It offers banking, insurance, and offshore services, attracting foreign investment.

  • Agriculture, mainly sugarcane cultivation, has historically been necessary, but its contribution has declined. Efforts are being made to diversify into fruits, vegetables, and seafood.

  • The government is promoting innovation, technology, and the digital economy. Investments in infrastructure, education, and skills development support these sectors.

  • Mauritius has achieved strong economic growth and development, focusing on diversification and attracting foreign investment. Policies are in place to promote sustainable growth and improve living standards.

Chamarel Waterfall

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Mauritius is during May to December, which is the dry and cooler season. During this time, the weather is generally pleasant with lower humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). It is also the peak tourist season so that you can expect more crowds and higher prices.

If you prefer warmer temperatures and don't mind some rainfall, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April and November. These months offer a good balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

January to March are the hottest and most humid months, with temperatures reaching 30°C (86°F) and occasional rainfall. This period is also prone to cyclones, so it may not be ideal for outdoor activities.

What to pack:

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing: Pack light, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool in the warm weather.

  • Swimwear

  • Sun protection: Bring sunscreen with a high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a cover-up or lightweight long-sleeved shirt to protect yourself from the intense sun.

  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be present, especially during the evenings, so pack a good quality insect repellent.

  • Comfortable footwear: Bring sandals or flip-flops for the beach and comfortable walking shoes for exploring.

  • Light layers: Evenings can be cooler, so pack a light sweater or jacket for any unexpected temperature drops.

  • Travel adapter: Mauritius uses the British-style three-pin plugs, so bring a travel adapter if needed.

  • Medications and toiletries

  • Travel documents: Don't forget your passport, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or permits.

  • Optional items: If you plan to engage in water sports or snorkelling, consider bringing your own equipment. Also, a reusable water bottle and a small daypack can be handy for day trips.

Drones: You don't need to obtain a special permit to enter Mauritius with your drone and use it for recreational purposes. However, be respectful of their DCA regulations, which you can find here: Drone Requirement (govmu.org)

Stay connected: Upon arrival in Mauritius, head to the airport's arrival hall, where several mobile network providers offer SIM cards specifically designed for tourists. This is the most convenient option, as you can use your phone immediately. In addition to physical SIM cards, some network providers in Mauritius also offer e-SIM options. An e-sim is a digital SIM card that is embedded in your phone and can be activated remotely. This eliminates the need for a physical SIM card and allows you to switch between different network providers without changing SIM cards.

Choose the right network provider: The leading network providers in Mauritius are Telecom, Orange, Emtel, and MyT. Orange is known for its extensive coverage, while Emtel offers competitive data packages. We chose Telecom because they have comprehensive coverage and provide reliable service throughout the island. We took a 200 GB data package with unlimited SMS for Rs 174 (15 EUR). You could pre-book it before travelling to Mauritius here: tourist sim - my.t mobile (myt.mu)

Mauritius Entry Form: Before travel, it is recommended for all travellers to fill out the digital ALL IN ONE FORM, which we should have remembered to fill out and had to do before the passport check. If you want to travel hassle-free, you better do it in advance. After filling out the online form above, it will generate a PDF document with a QR Code, which must be presented on arrival at Mauritius Airport.

HOW TO GET AROUND

We chose to rent a car, which in my opinion is the best way to explore the island and I will write only about it. We were scammed by a legit and very well-rated car rental company for giving us a private (not rental) car without our knowledge. On top of that, the car was in a very bad condition. We found out later that it was illegal to drive it during the trip when the police stopped us. We had a "contract", but apparently, it wasn't legit as well.

When it comes to car rental in Mauritius, it is essential to be aware of the regulations and restrictions in place. One crucial rule is that driving a privately owned car as a tourist is prohibited. You may face fines or other legal consequences if caught driving a private vehicle without the proper permits.

To ensure that you are renting a legitimate car, looking out for the colour of the front license plate is essential. Rental cars in Mauritius have yellow license plates, while privately owned vehicles have white ones. The yellow license plate indicates that the car is registered as a rental vehicle and is legally allowed to be driven by tourists.

To avoid any issues or potential scams, renting a car from a reputable car rental company is advisable, which sometimes doesn't help, as we see. These companies will provide you with a properly registered and insured vehicle, ensuring you comply with the local laws and regulations.

When renting a car, carefully read the terms and conditions of the rental agreement. This will include details about insurance coverage, mileage limits, fuel policy, and any additional fees or charges. Inspecting the car thoroughly before accepting it, noting any existing damages and reporting them to the rental company is also recommended.

Driving in Mauritius can be an enjoyable experience, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace. However, driving responsibly, following traffic rules, and being aware of local driving habits is important. Keep in mind that Mauritius follows left-hand driving and road conditions can vary, especially in rural areas.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1.

Arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU).

After forgetting to fill out the entry form in advance, we had to rush to do it while queueing for passport control. Once we passed passport control, we purchased a SIM card from Telecom to ensure reliable communication during our trip. However, our experience with the car rental representative could have gone better.

Upon arrival, we waited for the car rental representative to meet us, but unfortunately, they were nowhere to be found. We waited a long time, growing increasingly frustrated and concerned about the delay.

In an attempt to reach the representative, we sent multiple messages, hoping for a prompt response. Finally, someone arrived, and without much speaking, he led us on a walk, with us dragging our big suitcases, to the farthest point of the airport parking lot. This immediately raised a red flag for us, as no designated rental cars were in sight.

In hindsight, we should have been more cautious and questioned the situation from the beginning. The lack of a proper car rental representative, the parking lot's remote location and the car's state should have alerted us to potential issues.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT MAURITIUS AT ANAHITA

We had the pleasure of staying for three nights at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita. Situated on the island's east coast, the resort boasts a stunning location surrounded by lush tropical gardens and the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

One of the highlights of our stay was our villa with a private pool. The spacious and beautifully designed villa provided us with the utmost privacy and tranquillity. We spent countless hours lounging by the pool, enjoying the warm Mauritian sun and taking refreshing dips whenever we pleased. It truly felt like our own little piece of paradise.

When it came to dining options, the resort left us spoilt for choice. With several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, we were able to indulge in a culinary journey throughout our stay. From the exquisite Italian pop-up restaurant at Acquapazza to the authentic Mauritian flavours at Bambou and the delicious Asian cuisine at Umi Zaka, each meal was a delightful experience that satisfied our taste buds.

One of the resort's unique features was the free shuttle boat service to Île aux Cerfs, a nearby island known for its pristine beaches and turquoise waters. We took advantage of this service and spent a day exploring the island's natural beauty. The private beach provided by Four Seasons on Île aux Cerfs was a true gem, offering a secluded spot to relax and soak up the sun. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at La Plaz, a bar and restaurant located on the same beach owned by the resort.

Our stay at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita was truly unforgettable. From the idyllic location to the luxurious villa with a private pool, the resort exceeded our expectations in every way. The variety of dining options, the shuttle boat service to Île aux Cerfs, and the indulgent spa treatment they offer all contributed to an exceptional experience. We left the resort feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and with memories that will last a lifetime.

We arrived very early in the morning, and the resort checked us in at the villa, showed us around, and invited us for breakfast. Once we had breakfast and settled in the room, we indulged in a couple's spa treatment at the resort's spa - a much-needed pampering after the long flight. The treatment room overlooked the tranquil lagoon, creating a serene atmosphere that instantly put us at ease. The skilled therapists provided us with a blissful experience, combining traditional Mauritian techniques with modern wellness practices. It was the perfect way to unwind and reconnect with each other amidst the beauty of our surroundings.

Returning to our villa after the massage, we rested by the pool, went to walk on the beach, and took our time getting ready for a delightful evening. We started with a drink at Blu'Zil, a chic lounge that offered stunning views of the surroundings. Then, we made our way to the pop-up restaurant, where we had the pleasure of sampling the vegan Italian cuisine crafted by renowned Michelin chef Marco Garfagnini at Acquapazza. The truffle pizzetta was an absolute standout. The combination of fresh ingredients and expertly crafted dishes made for a truly memorable dining experience.

As we returned to our room, we were greeted with a delightful surprise from the Four Seasons team - a rose petal bath, a perfect way to end our day of relaxation and indulgence. It was a beautiful gesture that made our honeymoon even more special.

DAY 2.

EMBRACING THE SLOW PACE OF A TRUE VACATION IN MAURITIUS

Our second day in Mauritius was about taking it slow and savouring every moment, something we hadn't had the chance to do in a while. We kicked off the day with a delightful breakfast at the Bambou Restaurant, fueling ourselves for the adventures ahead.

ÎLE AUX CERFS – 15-minute boat ride from Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita

After leisurely preparing in our villa, we made our way to the pool, where we spent time basking in the sun and enjoying the refreshing water. When the time came, we hopped on a boat for a scenic 15-minute ride to Île aux Cerfs, a picturesque island paradise. As we stepped onto the island, we were greeted with a refreshing drink, setting the tone for a day of relaxation and exploration.

The pristine beach and crystal-clear waters of Île aux Cerfs provided the perfect backdrop for our day of leisure. We soaked up the sun, took refreshing dips in the ocean, and indulged in a yummy lunch. When it was time to head back, we caught the last boat, which departs every 45 minutes starting from 11:45, the last boat being at 4:15 PM.

To cap off our day of relaxation, we decided to treat ourselves to a delicious dinner at Umi Zaka, the Asian cuisine restaurant at Four Seasons Mauritius. We were excited to try their renowned dishes and were not disappointed. We started our meal with a plate of spicy edamame. The combination of the fresh, steamed soybeans with the spicy seasoning was absolutely addictive. We couldn't resist popping them into our mouths one after another. The portions were generous, and we soon realised we had ordered more than we could handle. But that didn't stop us from savouring every bite.

After our delicious dinner, we returned to our room, excited that our wedding pictures and videos had finally arrived. It was an emotional evening as we sat together, reminiscing about our special day and reliving the beautiful moments the photographer and videographer captured.

We watched some pictures and videos that night, saving the rest for when we returned home. It was a beautiful way to end the day, surrounded by the memories of our wedding and the love that brought us to this incredible honeymoon in Mauritius.

DAY 3.

EARLY WAKE UP FOR SUNRISE FOLLOWED BY FLOATING BREAKFAST

The third day of our Mauritius vacation was nothing short of magical. We kicked off the day by rising early to witness the breathtaking sunrise. With the Four Seasons bikes at our disposal, we embarked on a leisurely ride around the resort, taking in the stunning views and immersing ourselves in the tranquil surroundings.

Returning to our villa, a heart-shaped trail floating breakfast was served in our private pool. The experience was truly enchanting, surpassing all our expectations.

ÎLE AUX CERFS

Eager to soak up more of the island's natural wonders, we returned to Île aux Cerfs for a day of beach relaxation. The pristine white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters beckoned us, and we eagerly obliged.

ROMANTIC CANDLELIT DINNER IN OUR VILLA

As the day ended, we prepared ourselves for a truly romantic experience - a candlelit dinner in our villa. The setting and the food were incredible. With the sun slowly descending on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape, we found ourselves surrounded by the symphony of nature. The gentle rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore created an intimate and awe-inspiring ambience.

DAY 4.

LAST MOMENTS AT FOUR SEASONS MAURITIUS AT ANAHITA

On our fourth day in Mauritius, we started off with a delightful breakfast at the Bambou restaurant at Four Seasons Mauritius. The restaurant offered a wide array of delicious options, from fresh fruits to pastries, made-to-order omelettes and plenty of vegan options (I loved their Indian food). We savoured every bite, knowing it would fuel us for the exciting day ahead.

After breakfast, we packed up our belongings and hit the road towards the extreme southwestern tip of the island - Le Morne Brabant. We left our luggage at our Airbnb in La Gaulette, as we wanted to travel light for our adventure.

BEAU CHAMP – LA GAULETTE – approx. 75 km

WHERE TO STAY

EL PARAISO – an Airbnb in La Gaulette

We were fortunate to find a spacious and affordable Airbnb in La Gaulette. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment has a balcony, kitchen, and living room, making it the perfect choice for our stay. The owners were incredibly kind and had a love for animals, with dogs, cats, and even parrots as part of their family. We were drawn to this Airbnb because of its convenient location, allowing us to easily explore and visit all the attractions in the area. While there are luxurious hotels nearby, we wanted to immerse ourselves in the local culture and experience the authentic ambience of the area. The apartment also provided parking, which was included in the price. From the balcony, we even had a partial view of Le Morne, adding to the charm of our stay. We highly recommend this Airbnb for anyone seeking a mix of comfort and authenticity in their accommodations.

A GAULETTE – LE MORNE BEACH – approx. 7 km

Le Morne Beach

As we arrived at the public parking of Le Morne beach, we walked to the beach, where we were greeted by the sight of the sun slowly descending towards the horizon. The golden hues painted the sky, creating a mesmerising backdrop for the crystal-clear waters and pristine white sands. We couldn't resist the temptation to dip our toes in the warm ocean and take a stroll along the beach, feeling the soft sand between our toes.

As the sun began to set, we found a cosy spot to sit and watch the magical moment unfold. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colours - shades of orange, pink, and purple blending together in perfect harmony.

After waving goodbye to the sunset, we went to Aloha, a small, charming organic restaurant in our Airbnb neighbourhood, where they also had delicious vegan burgers.

DAY 5.

LA GAULETTE – NOMAD – approx. 8 km

Our fifth day in Mauritius began with a delightful breakfast at Nomad, a charming restaurant I can wholeheartedly recommend. With its unique atmosphere and delectable menu, it was the perfect way to start our day of exploration.

NOMAD – TAMARIN – approx. 6 km

TAMARIN

Our first stop was Tamarin, a picturesque village located on the western coast of Mauritius. Known for its stunning beaches and vibrant marine life, Tamarin offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. We couldn't resist strolling along the pristine shoreline, feeling the soft sand beneath our feet and listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore.

TAMARIN – FLIC EN FLAC - approx. 14 km

Flic en Flac Beach

FLIC EN FLAC

Next on our itinerary was Flic en Flac, a popular tourist destination renowned for its long stretch of white sandy beach. As we arrived, we were greeted by the sight of palm trees swaying gently in the breeze and the inviting turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. We spent some time sunbathing, having some drinks and enjoying the warm ocean waters. Flic en Flac is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants offering a variety of cuisines to suit every palate.

FLIC EN FLAC – LE MORNE – approx. 31 km

LE MORNE

Le Morne is a stunning peninsula located on the southwestern tip of Mauritius. It is known for its iconic mountain, Le Morne Brabant, which stands tall at 556 meters above sea level. This mountain is not only a natural wonder but also holds significant historical and cultural significance.

Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO World Heritage site considered one of Mauritius's most important historical landmarks. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a refuge for escaped enslaved people known as Maroons. These slaves sought shelter on the mountain, forming communities and creating a unique culture that blended African, Indian, and Creole traditions. The mountain became a symbol of resistance and freedom.

Today, hiking Le Morne Brabant is a popular activity for visitors to Mauritius. The hike offers breathtaking views of the surrounding turquoise waters, lush greenery, and the picturesque coastline. However, it is important to note that the hike is considered moderately difficult and requires a certain level of fitness and agility.

The trail begins at the mountain's base and winds up through dense vegetation, rocky terrain, and steep slopes. Hikers will encounter challenges along the way, including narrow paths, exposed cliffs, and some scrambling sections. It is advisable to wear appropriate hiking shoes, carry plenty of water, and use sun protection due to the exposed nature of the trail.

As hikers ascend the mountain, they will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, the surrounding islands, and the lush landscapes of Mauritius. At the summit is a small plateau where hikers can take a well-deserved rest and soak in the awe-inspiring vistas.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to Le Morne Beach, where the iconic Le Morne Brabant mountain stood tall against the backdrop of a stunning sunset, casting a mesmerising glow over the landscape.

Dinner at Wapalapam Island Eatery and back to our Airbnb.

DAY 6.

LA GAULETTE – TAMARIN – approx. 13 km

WHALE WATCHING

Whale watching

Our meetup point with Ocean Brothers Mauritius was set for an early start at 6 AM, ensuring we had the best chance of encountering sperm, humpback whales and dolphins. The team at Ocean Brothers Mauritius is dedicated to providing unforgettable whale-watching experiences while prioritising the well-being and conservation of these magnificent creatures.

Ocean Brothers Mauritius utilised a hydrophone during the excursion to enhance our chances of spotting whales. A hydrophone is a specialised underwater microphone used to detect and amplify sounds in the water. It allows the team to listen to the unique vocalisations and songs of the whales, helping them locate their presence and track their movements.

Sperm whales can be seen in Mauritius throughout the year, as they reside in the area. However, the best time to spot them is from June to September in the austral winter months.

On the other hand, Humpback whales are migratory and can be seen in Mauritius during their annual migration. They pass through the waters of Mauritius between July and November. The peak season for humpback whale sightings is usually in August and September.

Luck was on our side, as we were fortunate to witness numerous sightings of these incredible creatures.

SPERM WHALES

Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales, with adult males reaching lengths of up to 60 feet and weighing up to 45 tons. These whales are known for their massive heads, which can make up to one-third of their body length.

One of the most distinctive features of sperm whales is their large, square-shaped heads, which house the largest brain of any animal on Earth. Their heads also contain a unique spermaceti organ, filled with a waxy substance called spermaceti. The purpose of this organ still needs to be fully understood, but it is believed to play a role in buoyancy control and echolocation.

Sperm whales are deep divers and can descend to incredible depths in search of their prey. They are known to dive as deep as 3,000 feet and can stay submerged for up to 90 minutes. Their diet primarily consists of squid, but they have also been known to feed on fish and other marine mammals.

These whales are highly social animals and live in family groups called pods. The pods are led by a dominant female, known as the matriarch, and can consist of several females and their offspring. Adult males, known as bulls, tend to live solitary lives or form smaller bachelor groups.

Sperm whales are known for their unique clicking vocalisations, which they use for communication and echolocation. These clicks can be extremely loud and can travel for long distances underwater. The echolocation abilities of sperm whales are so advanced that they can locate prey in complete darkness and navigate through the ocean's depths.

Sperm whales were heavily hunted for their valuable spermaceti oil during the era of commercial whaling, which led to a significant decline in their population. However, they are now protected under international law, and their numbers have been slowly recovering.

Spotting a sperm whale in Mauritius is a truly remarkable experience. These majestic creatures can often be seen breaching, spy-hopping, or fluking their tails as they dive deep into the ocean. Their presence in the waters of Mauritius adds to the rich marine biodiversity of the region and provides a thrilling opportunity for whale watchers and nature enthusiasts.

Two whales swimming in the Indian Ocean.

HUMPBACK WHALES

Humpback whales are known for their impressive size and acrobatic displays. They are one of the largest species of whales, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet and weighing up to 40 tons. Their long pectoral fins and distinctive knobby heads make these magnificent creatures easily recognisable.

Humpback whales are highly migratory, travelling long distances between their feeding and breeding grounds. They undertake one of the longest migrations of any mammal, covering thousands of miles each year. Humpback whales can be seen breaching, tail slapping, and even singing their hauntingly beautiful songs during their migration.

These whales are known for their complex and unique songs, which can last up to 20 minutes and can be heard underwater for miles. The purpose of these songs still needs to be fully understood, but they are believed to play a role in communication and mating rituals.

Humpback whales are filter feeders, primarily feeding on krill and small fish. They use a feeding technique called bubble net feeding, where they blow bubbles in a circular pattern to trap their prey before lunging through the centre of the bubble net with their mouths wide open.

Humpback whales are a protected species, and their populations have been slowly recovering since the end of commercial whaling. They are a popular attraction for whale-watching enthusiasts worldwide, including in Mauritius, where lucky visitors can witness their awe-inspiring displays during the migration season.

DOLPHINS

In Mauritius, the most common species of dolphins that can be found are the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and the spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris).

A lot of dolphins swimming in the waters of the Indian Ocean.
Swimming with dolphins

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin is a coastal species often seen in the waters around Mauritius. They are known for their curved mouths and greyish-brown colouration. These highly social dolphins can be found in groups ranging from a few individuals to larger pods.

Spinner dolphins are another species commonly found in the waters of Mauritius. They are known for their acrobatic displays, where they leap out of the water and spin in the air. Spinner dolphins have a slender body and a long, thin snout. They are usually found in large groups and are known for their energetic and playful behaviour.

Both species of dolphins can often be seen swimming and playing in the waters around Mauritius.

Dolphins are highly social animals and live in groups called pods. These pods can range from a few individuals to hundreds of dolphins. Within the pod, dolphins communicate with each other using a variety of clicks, whistles, and body movements. They have a complex social structure and engage in cooperative behaviours such as hunting and protecting each other from predators.

One of the most fascinating aspects of dolphins is their intelligence. They have large brains relative to their body size and are known for their problem-solving abilities and capacity for learning. Dolphins have been observed using tools like sponges to protect their snouts while foraging for food on the ocean floor. They are also known for their ability to mimic human actions and understand and respond to commands.

Dolphins are carnivorous and primarily feed on fish and squid. They use a hunting technique called herding, where they work together as a team to corral schools of fish into tight groups, making it easier to catch their prey. Dolphins are also known to engage in playful behaviour, such as riding the bow waves created by boats or leaping out of the water in a behaviour known as breaching.

After the fantastic whale-watching experience, we broke our car. We had to bring it for reparation, which meant 5-6 hours of waiting time after considerable negotiation to be repaired on the same day because the auto care was jam-packed and the only vehicle service in the area. During this time, we sought refuge at Le Kiosk Restaurant and made the journey back on foot amidst the rain.

Nevertheless, all's well that ends well - we successfully had the car fixed, cuddled some puppies at our Airbnb and even had the opportunity to visit some of Nico's relatives residing in Mauritius.

DAY 7.

LA GAULETTE – BLACK RIVER GORGES NATIONAL PARK – approx. 12 km

BLACK RIVER GORGES NATIONAL PARK - CHAMAREL WATERFALL + SEVEN COLOURED EARTH

Black River Gorges National Park is a stunning natural reserve in the southwestern part of Mauritius. It is known for its lush greenery, rugged landscapes, and diverse wildlife. The park covers an area of approximately 68 km2 and is home to several endemic plant and animal species.

To enter Black River Gorges National Park, visitors are required to pay an entrance fee. The fee for foreigners is typically higher than for locals or residents. The entrance fee helps support the conservation efforts and maintenance of the park's trails and facilities.

Foreign entrance fee: MUR 550 (Chamarel Park including Chamarel Waterfall and 7 Coloured Earth viewpoints).

One of the park's highlights is the country's tallest - Chamarel Waterfall. This magnificent waterfall cascades down a height of about 100 meters, surrounded by dense vegetation. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the waterfall from various viewpoints within the park. The area around the waterfall is also an excellent spot for picnics and relaxation.

Another popular attraction near Black River Gorges National Park is the Chamarel Seven-Coloured Earth. This natural phenomenon is a unique geological formation where the sand dunes display various vibrant colours, including red, brown, violet, and blue. The colours are believed to result from the volcanic activity and mineral content in the soil. The Chamarel Seven-Coloured Earth is a must-visit site for its surreal and captivating beauty.

HELICOPTER RIDE - UNDERWATER WATERFALL

For a truly unforgettable experience, consider taking a scenic flight – either a seaplane or helicopter ride that passes above the Underwater Waterfall. I recommend you book the seaplane, but I recommend you do it much in advance because one month before our trip the flights were fully booked and we had to consider a helicopter flight instead. Our 15-minute helicopter ride departed at 2 PM from Lavilleon Adventure Park, which is within the Black River Gorges National Park. We flew with Corail Helicopters, sharing a price - of EUR 180 per person; in exclusivity – EUR 720.

Please note that the availability and prices of helicopter rides may vary, and it is advisable to check with local tour operators for the most up-to-date information and bookings.

We were initially greeted with rain during our helicopter ride to view the Underwater Waterfall. However, as we approached the site, the sun broke through the clouds, casting a beautiful golden light on the ocean below. It was a magical moment, and the weather seemed to align perfectly with our arrival at this natural wonder.

The Underwater Waterfall is a mesmerising optical illusion created by the movement of sand and silt on the ocean floor. From above, it appears as if a massive waterfall cascades into the ocean's depths. The helicopter ride provides a unique perspective of this natural wonder and lets you appreciate its grandeur. This mesmerising sight has become a popular attraction for visitors to Mauritius.

As we marvelled at the illusion of the Underwater Waterfall, another incredible sight unfolded before us. From the helicopter's vantage point, we spotted another majestic whale swimming gracefully in the waters below. It was a breathtaking encounter, and we were in awe of this magnificent creature's sheer size and beauty. Whales two days in a row. So lucky.

The combination of witnessing the Underwater Waterfall and spotting a whale from the sky made our helicopter ride unforgettable.

After passing by the Underwater Waterfall, the helicopter ride may continue to offer breathtaking views of Mauritius' coastline, mountains, and other natural landmarks. La Prairie Beach is a hidden gem located on the southeastern coast of Mauritius. It is a secluded and pristine stretch of coastline that offers a tranquil and peaceful escape from the bustling tourist areas.

One of the highlights of La Prairie Beach is its calm and shallow lagoon. The lagoon is protected by a coral reef, creating a safe and tranquil swimming area. It is an ideal spot for families with children or those who prefer a more relaxed swimming experience.

DAY 8.

LA GAULETTE – HARAS DU MORNE – approx. 7 km

HORSEBACK RIDING ON THE BEACH / SWIMMING WITH HORSES

On our last day in the area, we started with breakfast at Wapalapam Island Eatery and a bucket list activity. Swimming with horses was a dream come true. However, what truly touched my heart and motivated me to engage in this activity with Haras du Morne was learning about their story and witnessing the exceptional care they provide for these magnificent creatures.

The experience of barefoot horse riding on the beach, accompanied by my horse named Black as we galloped along the shoreline, was absolutely amazing.

What made it even more extraordinary was the moment when the saddle was removed, allowing me to feel the horse's warm skin beneath me as we entered the water.

Immersed in the water, I felt a deep connection and trust as we shared the tiny waves together. Watching the horses gracefully navigate the water, their powerful bodies moving effortlessly, was a sight that will forever be etched in my memory.

P.S. The horses love bathing in these waters with or without companions.

🔎 Discovering the distinctive backgrounds of each horse at Haras du Morne added an extra layer of fascination to this already remarkable experience. These horses, once prominent racehorses, had origins far from the shores of Mauritius. Instead of facing the grim fate of being euthanised, which is often reserved for retired champions of the Mauritian horse racing circuit, they found a haven at this sanctuary.

They could roam freely, galloping with a newfound sense of liberation. It was truly awe-inspiring to witness their contentment as they embraced their new lives away from the pressures of the racing circuit.

It's time to return to our Airbnb, take our luggage and say goodbye to the kind hosts and the beautiful Le Morne area.

BAIE AUX TORTOUES – HOLIDAY INN MAURITIUS MON TRESOR – approx. 60 km

WHERE TO STAY

HOLIDAY INN MAURITIUS MON TRESOR

If you have an early flight, I recommend staying at Holiday INN Mauritius Mon Tresor.

The hotel is conveniently located and has frequent shuttles from and to the airport. I don't recommend you stay and spend your time and vacation there, but it is an excellent choice for those seeking a few more hours of sleep before their flight.

We arrived at the hotel around 7 PM and, after checking in, we drove to return our unauthorised rental car. We informed the rental car company about our surprise when, thanks to the police, we discovered that the car was private and it was illegal for us to drive it. However, they showed no remorse for their illicit activity. To make matters worse, the person handling the situation dared to ask us to pay cleaning fees, even though they had given us the car in a terrible and filthy condition. This was our final straw, and naturally, we refused to pay.

Regardless, we took the shuttle back to the hotel, had dinner, and decided to go to bed early since we had an early flight the following day. Instead of dwelling on this small scam, we chose to focus on all the unique encounters and experiences we had in Mauritius.

DAY 11.

Getting up with the roosters and au revoir beautiful Mauritius.

Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita

Our honeymoon in Mauritius was an excellent start to our married life. The crystal-clear waters stretched as far as the eye could see, inviting us to dive in and explore the vibrant marine life beneath the surface.

It was a reminder of the incredible wonders that nature has to offer, and we felt incredibly fortunate to have been a part of it.

Our days were filled with endless beach exploration as we strolled hand in hand along the pristine shores, feeling the soft sand between our toes and listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore.

With its dramatic mountain backdrop, Le Morne was a sight that took our breath away.

The locals went out of their way to make us feel welcome, sharing their culture, traditions, and stories with us. Through these interactions, we truly felt the spirit of Mauritius, and it left an indelible mark on our hearts.
